Sandhya Vandanam — The Twilight Practice
A guide to the daily sandhya practice, the foundational discipline of a dvija.
Sandhya Vandanam is the threefold daily practice performed at the three sandhis (junctions) of the day — dawn, noon, and dusk. It is the cornerstone of brahminical discipline and is open to any sincere seeker today.
## Three sandhis
- **Pratah sandhya** — at dawn, just before sunrise
- **Madhyahna sandhya** — at midday
- **Sayam sandhya** — at dusk, just after sunset
## Core steps
1. **Aachamana** — sip water three times with appropriate mantras, purifying the body internally.
2. **Pranayama** — controlled breathing with the recitation of Pranava + Vyahritis + Gayatri.
3. **Sankalpa** — formal intention naming the time, place, and purpose.
4. **Marjana** — sprinkling water over oneself for purification.
5. **Argya pradana** — offering water to Surya. Stand facing east at dawn, west at dusk, and pour water through the joined palms while chanting the Gayatri.
6. **Gayatri Japa** — chant the Gayatri Mantra a minimum of 10, 28, or 108 times depending on discipline.
7. **Upasthana** — standing prayer to Surya.
8. **Abhivadana** — formal salutation introducing one's lineage.
## Spirit
The practice marks the seeker's gratitude at every turning of the day. It is the rhythm by which the inner life keeps time with the cosmic.
