The Shakti Peethas are shrines of the Devi (Divine Mother). According to legend, when Sati immolated herself and Shiva carried her body, Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra cut it into pieces that fell to earth — each becoming a Shakti Peetha. Different traditions list 51, 52, or 108 sites; this directory includes the most widely venerated.
