Introduction

ahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga (IAST: mahākāleśvara) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, shrines which are said to be the most sacred abodes of Shiva. It is located in the ancient city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. The temple is situated on the side of the holy river Shipra. The presiding deity, Shiva in the lingam form is believed to be Swayambhu, deriving currents of power (Shakti) from within itself as against the other images and lingams that are ritually established and invested with mantra-shakti. Madhya Pradesh has two Jyotirlingas, the second one, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, is situated about 140 km south of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.

History

The temple complex was destroyed by Iltutmish during his raid of Ujjain in 1234–35. The Jyotirlinga was dismantled and believed to be thrown into a nearby 'Kotiteerth Kunda' (a pond neighbouring the temple) with the Jaladhari (a structure supporting the Lingam) stolen during the invasion. It was again attacked by Jalaluddin Khalji and Alauddin Khalji. It was later reconstructed and revived during the Maratha rule in the 18th century by Maratha Diwan Ramachandra Sukthankar.

About the deity — Shiva

Shiva, also known as Mahadeva and Hara, is one of the principal deities of Hinduism. He is the Supreme Being in Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism.

यात्रा योजना

Before you go

  • Dress code for Garbh Grah & Bhasma Aarti

For entry to the inner sanctum (Garbh Grah) and for Bhasma Aarti darshan, men must wear a dhoti (typically with the upper body uncovered during the ritual) and women must wear a saree. Salwar suits, jeans, T-shirts, shorts, and western/sleeveless attire are not accepted at the inner gate. Modest traditional clothing is expected elsewhere in the temple premises.

  • No photography inside the sanctum

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the Garbh Grah and in the immediate darshan queue near the Jyotirlinga. Mobile phones are generally allowed in the outer premises but should remain stowed near the sanctum.

  • Bhasma Aarti requires advance online booking

The Bhasma Aarti is performed daily around 04:00–06:00 AM and seating is strictly limited. Bookings open on the official temple website only — there is no authorised third-party reseller. Plan to book around two weeks in advance and bring printed confirmation plus a photo ID.
