Introduction

ahalakshmi Temple (also known as Ambabai Mandir) is an important Hindu temple and shakti peeth dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, who is worshipped by locals as Ambabai. Goddess Mahalakshmi is the consort of Maha Vishnu and it is one of shakta pithas in India. It is believed that Ambabai have appeared to kill demon Kolhasur here.

History

The temple of the goddess Mahalakshmi was built by the Chalukya king Karnadeva in 634 CE.

Lakshmi, also known as Shri, is one of the principal goddesses in Hinduism, revered as the goddess of fortune, wealth, prosperity, beauty, fertility, sovereignty, and abundance. She, Parvati, and Sarasvati form the trinity of goddesses called the Tridevi.

    The temple is generally open for darshan from about 4:30 AM to 11:00 PM and entry is free. Special darshan/seva can be booked in advance only through the official temple website; avoid third-party booking sites.

  • Kirnotsav (Festival of Sun Rays)

    During Kirnotsav, the rays of the setting sun pass through a western window and fall directly on the goddess's face for a few fixed days each year. Exact dates shift slightly annually — check the official site before planning a visit timed to it.
